Hi, my name is Jack Rutter and I am one of the team who set up Kulani, and I want to tell you the story behind why I love this laptop stand so much.
For the last 10 years I have worked in advertising across a number of different companies, both start-ups and corporate. For the first 7 years I spent my time working in start-ups, chasing a dream of one kind or another.
Being six feet five inches not taking care of certain parts of my physical health in my life has had it's own unique consequences. Many tall people tend to have a weak core, which can be cause of back problems, and whilst I enjoyed exercising playing football or running, I tended to neglect areas such as my core, gluts and my upper body.
As a result it helped create a perfect storm for the problems that I would start suffering from. My focus at this time was work, work, work and was probably the unhealthiest I had ever been in my life. I ballooned up in weight as I sacrificed exercise to focus on my working life behind a desk, seeing clients or on some kind of international trip that was business related.
At this time, I was totally unaware of my body and the impact that bad working environments – desks and chairs, flying several times per month – could have on the quality of my life. I was chasing the dream and ignoring my body.
I had not given myself permission shift focus and take responsibility for sorting out the back issues I had been feeling for some time. I ignored them and put my nose back to the grindstone, each time my back got worse.
It came to a head one day when I decided to go see a back specialist who told me that I had three deteriorating disks in my back. He said,
“You’ve got two options, surgery which will be painful, and you will be out for 12 months, or we can work on strengthening your posture and re-engineering how you hold yourself”.
Over the last three years I have become an expert of how my body works and being as kind to my back as possible. This involves exercising two of every three days with a mixture of yoga and circuit training. If I do not do them for more than a two day period then I am in pain, and the only answer is do the exercises.
Ironically now at 38 I am the fittest I have ever been because of the problems I had in the past. It happened for a reason!
